New Georgia, Florida and California math curricula expand schools’ capacity to support student success
SEATTLE, WA — February 19, 2009 — Apex Learning®, the leading provider of digital curriculum for secondary education, has announced new online math curriculum tailored to academic standards in Georgia, Florida and California. These state-specific additions to Apex Learning’s already-robust suite of digital curriculum further the abilities of educators to help all students successfully meet high school graduation requirements regardless of learning styles and situations.
As with all Apex Learning programs, this new suite of math courses provides districts with the tools, curriculum and support needed to foster success in students. Engaging multimedia – in the form of animations, charts, graphs, images and interactive manipulatives – accompanies instructional text to provide students with multiple representations of concepts and address different learning styles.
Most importantly, the courses deliver standards-based instructional content and assessments, making it possible for teachers to focus on working with students one-on-one or in small groups to ensure that they master the subject.
"Apex Learning prides itself on being responsive to the educational demands facing school districts and teachers," said Cheryl Vedoe, CEO of Apex Learning. "Our standards-based curriculum will help educators better meet the needs of all their students."
Georgia’s revised state math standards integrate algebra, geometry and other content strands traditionally taught as separate courses into one. Apex Learning’s Georgia Math courses meet the Georgia Performance Standards and are aligned to the state’s Instructional Frameworks in mathematics.
Each Apex Learning Georgia Math course is custom-built to meet the state’s expectations for math curriculum. Interactive tasks allow students to explore and discover math concepts through real-world situations.
Courses assume readiness for grade-level academic challenges, but include additional support for students who can benefit from it, such as study sheets and an audio option for instructional text. The first course, Math I, will be available statewide in August.
Apex Learning has created a two-year Algebra I course sequence and customized it to meet specific standards for Florida and California.
Educators often refer to Algebra I as a "gateway" course because it is a prerequisite for continued study. A student’s performance in algebra can be an early indicator of whether they will remain in school and graduate. Research shows that Algebra I grades are an important predictor of success; students who failed this course were four times more likely to drop out than those who passed the course.
Apex Learning’s Algebra I-A and I-B courses for Florida were specifically designed to meet Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and Benchmarks. Apex Learning’s California Algebra I-A and I-B courses were developed to meet California Mathematics Content Standards for Algebra I. These two-year course sequences, delivered online to classrooms, are designed to support success for at-risk students who are not prepared for the academic challenges of the traditional one-year Algebra I course. The courses will be available in May.
Other courses from Apex Learning digital curriculum are already used successfully in Georgia, Florida and California schools for credit recovery and original credit programs. With the addition of these state-specific math courses, schools will have an additional option to support success for their students.
