Auburn School District #408 in Auburn, Washington, faced a challenge common to many school districts. Too many high school students were falling behind, and their progress toward graduation was disrupted. For many of these students, a history of limited academic success had eroded their confidence. Work, family, and other outside demands frequently competed with schoolwork for attention.
When it became obvious that it needed a better way to meet the needs of students who are not successful in the traditional classroom, the district decided to offer an alternative program and, in the fall of 2005, established West Auburn High School. The school aims to recapture students who have dropped out of high school and targets struggling students who are at risk of dropping out. Homeschooled students and GED non-completers are also benefiting from the option that West Auburn High School affords.
Digital Curriculum Enables Individualized Learning
West Auburn High School relies on Apex Learning digital curriculum to provide the individualized learning experience necessary for each student's success. Apex Learning digital curriculum was chosen because of the rigor of the online courses and the alignment to state standards.
"We jumped at the Apex Learning curriculum because the courses are built to state standards. We knew if students were successful in their coursework, they would be prepared for the state exam. And as important, their success in Apex Learning online courses is giving our students the confidence that they can succeed in college."
— Brad Sprague
Principal, West Auburn High School
Students are expected to complete a minimum of 25 hours of online coursework each week. To allow students to meet other obligations they may have — from raising a child to working full time — West Auburn High School allows students to complete coursework at home, something that is only possible with online courses. The Apex Learning instructional management and reporting capabilities allow school administrators and teachers to constantly monitor students' progress, whether they are in school or not, and to intervene when appropriate.
"The reporting and monitoring tools help me be a more effective principal. I am able to log in and show a parent how his or her child is doing. The reports enable us to do a behavioral intervention when needed, and give that student a chance to succeed."
— Brad Sprague
